Pipers, Jazz Band perform ‘Love is in the Air’

Love is in the Air was the theme for the spring 2019 Pipers and Jazz Band concert.

The Panola College Pipers and Jazz Band presented “Love is in the Air,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, in the Frances B. Ross Ballroom of the Charles C. Matthews Student Center. The Pipers were directed by Sandra Bauer, professor of vocal music, and the Jazz Band was directed by Dwaine Hubbard, professor of instrumental music.

On the program were popular songs including “Eli’s Comin,’” recorded by 3 Dog Night; “Got to Get You into My Life,” recorded by The Beatles; “Killing Me Softly,” recorded by Roberta Flack; “I Wish You Love,” recorded by numerous artists; “Birdland,” recorded by Manhattan Transfer; “Overjoyed,” recorded by Stevie Wonder; “Get It On,” recorded by Bill Chase; “A Thousand Years,” recorded by Christina Perri; “Chameleon, recorded by Herbie Hancock and others; “Shallow” from “A Star is Born,” recorded by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper; and “Superstition,” recorded by Stevie Wonder.

Vocal soloists during the concert included Kacia Johnson, Sydnee Griffin, Nichole Painter, Hunter Moon and Mia Sartor.

Singers in the Panola Pipers are Toluwani Ayodele, Loren Caserta, Sydnee Griffin, Emma Harden, Kacia Johnson, Hunter Moon, Nichole Painter, Mia Sartor, Kaitlyn Smith, and Aaron Tello.

Musicians in the Jazz Band include Savana Hanaway, Somali Fletcher, Whitney Ramsey, James Lilly, Josh Wood, Maggie Sims, Sarah Allen, Miguel Mendoza, Colby Taylor, Eden Nunez, Steven Sierra, Carrie Lilly, Martravian Williams, Nicklaus Powell, Mary Chance and Carrie Lilly.

Upcoming musical events include the Choir Concert at 7 p.m., April 18 in the Q.M. Martin Auditorium; Jazz on the Quad, at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 23 (bring a blanket or chair); Instrumental and Vocal Recital, at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 25; and the Band Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 28 in the Q.M. Martin Auditorium.
