Elephant’s Graveyard, created by George Brant and presented in arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc., is based on the true story of Mary the Elephant, also known as “Murderous Mary.” Mary was a five-ton Asian elephant that performed in the Sparks World Famous Shows circus. After being poked in the mouth by Red Eldridge, a newly-hired worker leading an elephant parade, Mary killed the worker. As a result, Mary was hanged on September 13, 1916. Following her death, a veterinarian inspected the elephant’s body and found that she suffered from an infected tooth, which is believed to be the reason she lashed out and killed Eldridge.
