With the unemployment rate driving down to new lows, and companies moving in and out of the country non-stop, jobs have become harder to find and degrees become more needed to secure a job. Why not major in the field with one of the best track records on the job market? Why not look for a job in an industry that has a high rate of job security? Why not be the change you want to see in the world while you do it? Why not take a look into the world of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (AFNR) degrees?

Whoa! Hear it out before shutting it out. You may be thinking, “I know nothing about farming or agriculture,” or maybe you are thinking, “I’m no yee yee country person,” but rest assured that there is a place for everyone in the AFNR industry. Take a look before closing you’re mind!

First things first, there is so much more in the AFNR world than just farming and ranching. The industry includes Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Gas/Oil, Food Sciences etc. However, this article will mainly focus on the agriculture and food side, but again, even in agriculture, the field is so broad that there is a job for everything and everyone.

Like playing in the dirt or with animals? Farmers, ranchers, livestock raisers — they got it. Mechanically or technology minded? Mechanic, equipment designer, computer programmer — they got it. Love sciences like chemistry and biology? Agronomist, plant biologist, Agri-chemist — they have it. Are you a communicator, financial person or politician? Lobbyist, economist, spokesperson lawyer — they have it! The list goes on forever. If you can be it, you can just about do it for the ag industry.

“Why would I want to do that for the ag industry,” you may ask. Simply put, jobs, jobs, jobs and more jobs. Check this out: Purdue University and the United States Department of Agriculture released research data saying between the years 2015 and 2020 the ag industry needs to fill 57,900 jobs a year BUT only 35,400 students are graduating in the ag fields annually. That’s 22,500 jobs out there waiting to be grabbed by YOU.

Employers are so in need of knowledgeable employees that universities that offer ag degrees have an average of 80-100% job placement within one year of graduating. For example, in 2012 Iowa State University had 57 students graduate with an Ag Business degree; of those, 55 of them had a full-time job within two weeks of graduation and the other two went to graduate school. The jobs are all there and they are just waiting for you to take. An old business man once said, “Companies are always hiring; the jobs may be all filled but they are always looking for improvement. Give them reason to believe you are the improvement.”

The median salary can be as high as $104,000 in certain areas of the agriculture industry. The jobs are world-wide from New York City to Carthage, Texas, to the plains of Africa and the jungles of South America to the Swiss Alps and Italian vineyards; every country has some type of ag program. In fact, did you know that the World Bank’s World Development Report 2008 says that data supports that a growth in the agriculture sector is at least twice as powerful at decreasing poverty in developing countries than growth in any other sector? Everyone needs it to survive, everyone needs it for food, clothing, gas, etc. That being said, the job security is second to none.

So again, ask yourself, “Why not have a secure job and job market? Why not make good money? Why not travel to foreign lands? Why not feed the people? Why not end poverty and hunger? Why not change the world?” Ask yourself “WHY NOT BECOME AN AGRICULTURIST?” Need a place to start? Start right here at Panola College. Want to check it out or learn more? Be the change you want to see in the world, be an agriculturalist.

This article makes a mom smile! Of course, it’s the mom of the author AND she is also an English teacher with freelance writing experience, too. But, hey! Love the article nonetheless!
