Sophomore Men’s Basketball honored March 4

With a first place finish in the North Zone of Region XIV Men’s Basketball, the Panola College Ponies took time out Saturday to honor the eight sophomores who are wrapping up their playing time at Panola.

#1 Keondre “KJ” Byers – from Charlotte, North Carolina, where he played at Phillip O’Berry High School. KJ played his freshman year at Iowa Western JC.  KJ is second in Region 14 in blocks.

#2 Keith “KJ” Hayes – from Little Rock, Arkansas, where he played at McClellan HS. Keith transferred to Panola College from UMASS Lowell University in Massachusetts. Keith has started in 12 games averaging 6.8 points per game.

#4 Eric McGill – from Memphis, Tenn., where he played at Bartlett HS. Eric transferred to Panola College from South East Missouri State. He is first in Region 14 in steals and has started 21 games averaging 10.7 points per game.

#5 Tyonte Robertson – from Cincinnati, Ohio, where he played at Withrow HS. Tyonte was a member of last year’s Panola College team that made it to the Region 14 Conference Championship game. He has been a part of 46 wins at Panola College the past two seasons.

#10 Devyn Wilson – from Brooklyn, New York, where he played at South Shore HS. Devyn came to Panola College from FCI Prep in Florida. He was  apart of last year’s team that made it to the Conference Championship game. Devyn has won NJCAA Player of the week this season, and is the Ponies’ leading scorer averaging 13.4 points per game.

#11 Chan Williams Bey – from Hartford, Connecticut, where he played at Wilbur Cross HS. Chan came to Panola from Shooting from Greatness Prep in North Carolina. Chan was also a part of last year’s team that made it to the Conference Championship game. He has been a part of 46 wins at Panola College the past two seasons.

#20 Tope Arikawe – from Nigeria. Tope played HS at Covenant Christian HS in Atlanta, Georgia. He has been a part of 46 wins at Panola College in two years. This year he has started 28 games averaging 11.9 points per game and 8.8 rebounds.

#22 Pernell Adge i- from Dumfries, VA. Pernell played at John Paul the Great HS, and played Prep at Fishburne Military Institution. Pernell transferred to Panola College from the University of Loyola Chicago.  Pernell has been a part of 22 wins at Panola College.

After the sophomore players were announced, Don Clinton, Athletic Director, said, “We would like to recognize two special people today that have a huge impact on this Men’s Basketball Program. We thank them for all of their support, dedication and effort to our Men’s Basketball players.

“First, Mrs. Ruth Brooks – Mrs. Brooks is an employee of Panola College. She travels to all of the Ponies Road Games, and is their #1 fan. She is also a mother to a lot of these players, and we thank her for everything that she does.

“Second, Mrs. Barbara McMillan. Barbara is the mother of Head Coach Grant McMillan. She resides in Van, TX. Earlier in the season her husband, also Coach McMillan’s father, Bill McMillan, passed away on November 12, 2016. This Season was dedicated by the team in the memory of Bill. We thank her for all she does for these young men.”
