SFA honors Dr. Powell as Distinguished Alumnus

Dr. Greg Powell was honored by Stephen F. Austin State University as a 2013 Distinguished Alumnus in an awards ceremony Friday, Nov. 15 at the Fredonia Hotel in Nacogdoches.

Dr. Powell earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science from SFA in 1980. He went on to earn a master’s degree in political science from Texas State University in San Marcos, and a doctorate from Texas A&M University in Commerce. He began his career in higher education teaching political science at Kilgore College, Texas State University and Del Mar College. His experience includes serving as department chair and a dean. He served as vice president of academic affairs at Middle George State College before joining Panola College as president in June 2000.

Under his leadership, Panola College has almost doubled its enrollment, from 1,400 to 2,700 students. His understanding of the role of technology in higher education, and has made presentations at state and national conferences on the topics of technology, distance education, academic advising and institutional effectiveness. The college is consistently ranked among the nation’s top 10 digital colleges, and for the past two years has been named to the Honor Roll as a Great College to Work For by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

 In 2012, he was named Citizen of the Year by the Panola County Chamber of Commerce, and in 2011, he was named Educator of the Year by the Coordinating and Development Corporation of Northwest Louisiana, Northeast Texas and Southwest Arkansas.

His efforts to spearhead a campaign to expand the M.P. Baker Library led to his receiving the 2010 leadership award from the National Council for Learning Resources. Dr. Powell successfully launched a campaign for a $35 million bond issue to continue improvements and expansion at Panola College. The bond issue passed with 84 percent voting yes. The first phase of the bond-funded projects will be a new student center and a new science/health sciences building, scheduled for completion in fall 2015.

He is a charter and lifetime member of the Panola County Chapter of the SFA Alumni Association. He continues to be a dedicated recruiter for SFA, which is the number one destination for students transferring from Panola College.

“It was a great honor to be recognized by my Alma mater. As I said in the acceptance speech, while the event focused on me, it is really the faculty, staff and trustees of Panola College who deserve the credit for Panola College’s accomplishments,” Dr. Powell said.
