Ponies win two road games against NETCC
The Panola Ponies baseball team improved their conference record to 3-1 with two wins over the Northeast Texas Eagles, 4-3 and 3-2.
In the first game, Carthage’s Gavin Williamson survived bases loaded jams in the fifth and seventh innings to post his second straight conference win. Williamson scattered seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters. Offensively, the Ponies chased Eagles’ ace Greg Milhorn in the top of the sixth. Carthage’s Clint Cage, who doubled and singled, scored a run and drove in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Derrian James (Beaumont) beat out an infield hit in the second and scored on catcher Jacob Blissett’s double off the wall. First baseman Stephen Schlett (Port Neches) followed James with an RBI and scored on Blissett’s double.
Final: Ponies 4, Eagles 3.
In the second game, freshman Hunter Palmer (Huntington), pitching on three days’ rest, gave up only three hits and one run in six innings. Coach Todd Shelton went to his ace reliever, Robbie Petty, in the bottom of the seventh. Petty survived a rocky eighth inning that included two intentional walks and a bases loaded jam, to come away with the save. Offensively, the Ponies scored two when James’s single in the top of the second plated freshmen Preston Manka (Grand Prairie) and Blissett. In the Ponies’ half of the third frame, sophomore Giovanni Lugo (Rio Grande, PR) walked, took second on a balk, and scored on Schlett’s second clutch hit of the day.
Final: Ponies 3, Eagles 2
The Ponies are 3-1 in conference play, 6-6 on the season. Monday night, they take to the road again for a single non-conference game against Tyler Junior College at Mike Carter Field in Tyler. Wednesday, Feb. 27, the Ponies travel to Bossier Parish Community College for a conference double header.
