Ponies sweep BPCC Cavaliers
The Panola Ponies improved their conference leading record to 5-1 by winning both games of a double-header on the Cavaliers’ home field Wednesday, Feb. 27. The Ponies’ season record is now 8-7. After a slow start in non-conference play, they are now above .500 for the first time this season.
Freshman Preston Guillory (Watson, LA) started and won the first game, with Wylie’s Robbie Petty closing out the seventh inning to earn the save. Guillory pitched six complete innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs, while striking out two and walking two.
Offensively, Wylie’s Stephen Schlett continued to post impressive numbers, driving in two runs and scoring another. The Ponies’ first baseman was 2-4 at the plate. Hunter Hagler also had two hits and stole two bases. Spring Hill’s Greg Martens, the Ponies’ lead-off hitter, had another great day at the plate, going 2-4 in the first game, while adding another run to his RBI total.
Final score: Ponies 5, Cavaliers 4
Coach Todd Shelton’s charges put on an offensive show in the second game, plating 9 runs on 15 hits. Offensive stars for the Ponies were Derrian “Boom” James (Beaumont) with 2 RBI, Martens with 2 hits, 2 runs, and an RBI, and Giovannie Lugo (Rio Grande, PR), who went 3-4 with an RBI. Hagler (Huntington), who had 5 hits on the day, added to the offensive fireworks in the second game with 3 hits and an RBI.
Shelton had to be pleased with the gutty showing of starter Kolbe Schufft (Haughton, LA), who in recent weeks has battled a sore shoulder, as well as opposing hitters. Schufft, who earned the win, lasted into the 6th inning, surrendering only 1 earned run. Promising young arm Adam Atkins (Grand Prairie) relieved Schufft in the 6th and shut out the Cavaliers on one hit through the 7th. Once again, Petty closed out the game, holding the Cavs to one unearned run in the 8th and 9th innings.
Final score: Ponies 9, Cavaliers 3
The Ponies take to the road again Saturday, March 2, for another conference double-header against the Navarro Bulldogs in Corsicana. Game time for the first game is 1 pm.
Wednesday, March 6, the Ponies play at home for the first time in two weeks, facing off against the Paris Dragons in a conference double-header that begins at 1 pm.
