Ponies split two with Navarro

Ponies split two with Navarro

Kaylee Prince

Hunter Hagler, #6, is congratulated by #12, Clint Cage, after Hagler scored a solo homerun against Navarro.

The Panola Ponies’ baseball team came within one run out of sweeping the conference leading Navarro Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon. In game one, with two out in the top of the 7th, the Bulldogs scratched out a run tie the score, 2-2. In the top of the 10th, the Bulldogs scored twice more to win the first game of the doubleheader, 4-2.

Preston Guillory started game one on the mound for the Ponies, holding the Bulldogs to two hits and a single run until he was relieved by Robbie Petty with two out in the top of the 6th. Petty pitched well enough to save the win for Guillory, but, in the top of the 7th, with two out, Petty was victimized by two Pony errors that plated the tying run for the Bulldogs. In their half of the 10th, the Ponies mounted a brief rally but it was too little, too late.

Final score: Navarro 4, Panola 3

In the second game Kolbe Schufft pitched another gem for the Ponies, going the distance while scattering seven hits and striking out three. Navarro struck first, scoring after Schufft yielded his single walk of the game in the third inning. The Ponies tied the game in the 4th on Hunter Hagler’s solo homerun. In the 5th, Trevin Sonnier started a two-run rally for the Ponies with the first of four straight singles. Derrian James’s follow-up single became a two-base hit when Sonnier took third, drawing the throw that allowed James to advance to second. Matt Spruill’s single plated Sonnier and James to give the Ponies a 3-1 lead.

Final Score: Panola 3, Navarro 1

The Bulldogs return to Corsicana with a conference leading 12-3 record. The Ponies are in second place at 12-6 in conference play, 18-12 overall. Next up, the Ponies travel to Paris Friday for a doubleheader with the third-place Dragons, who are 10-6 in conference play after splitting their doubleheader with Bossier Parrish today. In their last meeting, the Ponies swept the Dragons in Carthage, 4-2 and 4-3. Game time Friday is 1pm.
