Six sophomores will participate in the Texas/New Mexico All Star Baseball game sponsored by the Texas/New Mexico Baseball Coaches Association on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 27-28 in Fort Worth. Panola College will be represented by Adam Atkins, Clint Cage, Preston Guillory, Greg Martens, Robbie Petty and Matt Spruill. Cage and Petty will compete in a game at 12:30 p.m. Friday, with Atkins, Guillory and Martens on the roster for the 4:30 p.m. game on Saturday. Spruill, recovering from shoulder surgery, will not play in the All Star Game, but Coach Shelton expects him to be back in action later in the fall. Games will be played at LaGrave Minor League Baseball Field.

All 27 junior colleges in Texas will have one or more returning sophomores representing their school. It is a great opportunity for the players to get recognized and watched by professional baseball scouts and 4-year college scouts, according to Panola College Head Coach Todd Shelton. The scouts will be given the names of all the players participating in order for them to watch them. They will have the chance to watch all the players on the first day to look at aspects such as their running times, pitching speeds and how they hit in the batting cages. To make up the teams for the games, the junior colleges are split up into four conferences, Eastern, Southern, and two Western teams.
