Cosmetology students nail down a career
The Panola cosmetology program is offered on both the Carthage campus and the Shelby College campus, located in Center.
Paula Fults, department chair, is the instructor on the Shelby campus. Bobbie Smith is now the instructor on the Carthage campus.
“I used to be the instructor on the Center campus, so going from there to Carthage was a promotion for me,” Bobbie Smith said. “I went from part-time to full-time, so I have a lot more responsibility, but both programs are the same.” She is responsible for 22 students. Twenty cosmetology and two nail tech students are enrolled each semester. Students participate in a theory class every morning from 8-9am. At that time, they start servicing clients, and she’s responsible for getting her students started in the right direction with whatever procedure they are providing.
“I’ve always loved doing hair,” Emma Smith, Cosmetology student said. “My hair dresser inspired me. We’ve gotten really close, and she’s the only one I trust with my hair, and I hope one day that I can be like that for someone else,” Smith said.
To enroll in the cosmetology program, you first apply to Panola, then bring or mail your official transcript. Students under 30 will need a meningitis shot and must provide the school records of getting the shot. Also, a prospective student is required to come and have an informal interview with the instructors. After a student is enrolled, they are shown all practical skills, will have to pass a floor test, and accumulate a total of 150 hours before they can receive clients.
“Our goal for the program itself is to have a 90% passing rate, and we’ve always met that goal,” Bobbie Smith said. “Also we would love to get more Panola students to know what our program is about, and to get more students to come use our services at our discounted prices.”
The Carthage cosmetology department is located in the Merle Glass building, and are open to the public Tuesday-Thursday 9-3:30 and Friday 9-10:45.
