Clint Cage’s top-of-the-ninth inning grand slam pushed the Panola College Ponies to a 6-3 win over Paris in the Region XIV tournament Sunday, May 11.
Paris led 3-1 going into the top of the ninth inning. Victor Claudio tripled and scored on Nick Marshall’s single. With the score now 3-2, Greg Martens pinch ran for Marshall. Trent Shelton’s bunt resulted in a throwing error that moved Martens to third. Matt Spruill beat out a bunt, moving Shelton to second and loading the bases. This set the stage for Cage’s first pitch grand slam homerun to deep left center field.
With the Ponies leading 6-3, Adam Atkins, pitching in relief of starter Preston Guillory, closed the door on the Dragons in the bottom of the ninth.
Monday at 10 a.m., the Ponies play an elimination game against Alvin in the next round of the Region Tournament. The winner advances to the next game, scheduled for 8 p.m. The loser goes home.
