Fillies start season strong

After dropping the opening game of the season to thirteenth ranked Blinn College, the Fillies rebounded to win 5 matches in a row including a sweep of eighth ranked Missouri State University – West Plains. The Fillies were led throughout the match by sophomore Haley Hampton contributed with five kills and 2 solo blocks. Sophomore Ana Kiso ran the offense effectively totaling 20 assists, and freshman Nathali Chaves recorded 14 digs.

The Fillies finished up the Dana Hatch Tournament with two more wins on Saturday against Gulf Coast State College and Richland College. Nathali Chaves showcased her versatility against Gulf Coast by totaling 8 kills and 14 digs and Ana Kiso added 24 assists. Against Richland College, Haley Hampton and Nathali Chaves led the offense again with 4 kills apiece, Ana Kiso had 18 assists, and freshman libero Justine Luis, anchored the defense with 12 digs.

Following the Dana Hatch Invitational, the Fillies hosted their first home matches of the season against Brookhaven and NCTC. The Fillies cruised to victory with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-14 sweep of Brookhaven. Freshman Kennedi Coleman led the offense with 5 kills, and Justine Luis continued her solid defense with 17 digs.

In the final match of the day, the Fillies defeated NCTC 29-27, 22-25, 25-5, 25-16, but the Lady Lions pushed the Fillies to their limits. Behind the efforts of Haley Hampton, the Fillies took control of games 3 and 4 to finish the match on a high note. Hampton had 8 kills, 2 solo blocks, and tallied an incredible .889 hitting percentage. Libero Justine Luis had 24 digs and Ana Kiso dished out 30 assists.
