Asleep at the Wheel concert a success
The Texas Swing band, Asleep at the Wheel, performed in concert at the Carthage Civic Center on Saturday, Sept. 14. The performance was sponsored by the Panola College Fine and Performing Arts Department, in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the City of Carthage and Main Street.
More than 600 people came out to hear the Grammy-award winning band. Opening the show was a local group, In the Jeans, with Rachel Gee, Sydney Gee and Bob Gonzales.
Students and faculty from Panola College band and choir set up a concession stand serving barbecue sandwiches beginning at 5:30. Theatre students assisted with setup of the stage, the band set up, lighting and sound.
Freddy Mason, dean of fine and performing arts, introduced the show, explaining to the audience that this is the first in what the college hopes will be an ongoing series of Fine Arts events for the community. Tommie Ritter Smith, president of the Panola County Chamber of Commerce, spoke briefly about the impact of music on the community and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
