3rd Texas Cavalry musters on campus

  • Major Dyson Nickle talks to a group of Carthage Junior High students about the Civil War.

Members of the 3rd Texas Cavalry, a Regiment of Civil War Reenactors, have mustered on the Panola College campus Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 21-22.

Except for the cars driving by on West Panola, the lawn in front of campus resembles a Civil War camp, with tents, campfires, troops, their families and horses. Area school students are visiting campus to participate in this event, which commemorates the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States.

Participants wear period-correct costumes, and demonstrate camping, cooking, dancing, marching, horse-riding, battle reenactments, drills and living history demonstrations.

Commanding Officer Major Dyson Nickle leads the 3rd Texas Cavalry, and says the group participates in about 10 events per year, mostly in East Texas and Louisiana.

For more information, visit the group’s website at 3rd Texas Cavalry Regiment. To see more photos from the Panola College event, visit the Civil War Reenactment Photo Gallery.
